Within this text, the author is basically saying that a student should have already learned what they should learn in college and it might not be necessary for them to even go to college. He says that most core knowledge should be learned in the K-8 grades, while high school should be more survey courses such as humanities and social sciences.
Students need to learn more then they are actually learning in class, they might be learning something that they have already known. Also they are comparing students with the academic ability in the 80th percentile are still smart kids but we don't know if they will be able to respond to a course considering students in the lower odds are less likely to respond. The lower down the linguistic ladder the student is, the less likely the student will be having fun.
He says that going to a four year school might not be necessary because the average student is taking 32 courses within those years and that is more than enough to take the required classes for their appropriate field of study.
Getting a B.A. seems like the right decision for high school graduates that are headed to college but, Murray thinks its a bad economical decision to make. B.A. is a very big deal and very important in deciding stuff for college. and your future.
Three trends have gathered strength in the 20th century. First off, there was an increased proportion of jobs screened for a higher level education. Secondly, the increasing market value of those jobs. Finally, opening up college to more people with the academic ability to be there.
According to Murray, these trends have overturned the state affairs.
To wrap it up, answering the question, are too many people going to college? I would say that Murray believes there are because he feels that people already have the academic ability that they should have learned throughout the early years to be able to make it out of college and into the
"real world".
This was a great summary!
